About the Print

Last Summer, the ship I was working on out in the Aleutians pulled into port in Homer, AK for a mid-season resupply. I had one afternoon off, and was in the boatyard when I ran into a girlfriend (also a boat captain!) who happened to be on her way across the bay to dip-net for salmon in Chinapoot Cove. Now that may not sound like a real sentence to non-Alaskan folk, but Chinapoot is a real place (a magical fairyland, tbh), and dip-netting is a somewhat feral method that Alaska residents use to subsistence fish. Anyhow, short story long, we jumped in her little bay boat with wet-suits and coolers packed, tied off in the mouth of the cove, and hiked up a series of waterfalls where the salmon battled their way upstream to spawn, and we battled our way into the current to intercept a few and catch our food for the season. The whole afternoon was full of laughter, lupines, and fish scales, and the memories are woven into this painting.

Care Instructions

First and foremost, your pack requires daily walks and adventures in order to maintain its well-being. And if you uphold these responsibilities, you may notice a light yet persistent layer of grubbiness form on the vibrant colors of your pack. When this happens, it may be time to give it the ol' scrub-a-dub. We've put together a short instructional video for your entertainment. Please enjoy.

  1. Remove backpad.
  2. Use any "grease" removal laundry detergent (here we use Spray & Wash with great success). Apply directly on pack or onto a rag or sponge and scrub vigorously over any dirty areas.
  3. Let the detergent soak in for about 5 minutes.
  4. Toss in the laundry. We recommend using hot water and then just not showering for a couple days to make up for it.
  5. Voila!

About the Artist

Hailey Thompson is the artist behind Watercolorwoods. Her work reflects the wild rivers, massive glaciers, and ocean waves that bring her the most joy.

Before transitioning to art full time, Hailey spent years driving ships around Alaska and still does on occasion. Alaska’s brilliant auroras, rainforests, beaches of wildflowers, powerful rivers and ocean waves, and its many inhabitants endlessly inspire her work.

Hailey believes art is a love language. She feels that spending time on the land and water helps us build deeper relationships with the places we love and, in turn, inspires us to protect them. Through her art, she hopes people can feel some of the same joy and awe that inspire her and feel a little closer to their own precious places, too.

Outside of art, Hailey loves traveling, exploring whitewater in her kayak, backcountry skiing, and scrambling around rocks and alpine meadows. She’s also a reader, a terrible knitter, and a creative cook who admits she’s not very good at following recipes.
