Since childhood, Kimberly Costa-Stearns has been fascinated by the art world. Growing up on the East Coast, she spent a lot of time in museums and art galleries, studying many different genres of art. When she was in high school, she took as many art classes as possible. She traveled extensively overseas with her family growing up and then did study abroad in Florence, Italy during college. This helped to push her creative limits.

Kimberly graduated from James Madison University in Virginia with a BFA in Fine Arts and a concentration in Painting and Drawing. After graduation, she travelled the West Coast and fell in love with Oregon! She went back to JMU to get her teaching license, K-12, and immediately moved to Bend, Oregon to teach.

After living in Bend for the past 26 years, her work has slowly evolved. She typically photographs, then paints Central Oregon landscapes. Many of her landscape paintings are inspired by the Cascade Mountains and landscapes in Oregon.

She uses various textural techniques in her artwork. In her acrylic paintings, she uses a crumpled tissue paper and glue mixture on the canvas. This adds texture and dimension to the trees and mountains. She enjoys experimenting with a variety of mixed media materials, including her miniature “Origami series.” She has always been passionate about exploring new art mediums.

Kimberly also repurposes old snowboards, many of which have had a long life exploring the Cascade Mountains and surrounding areas. She likes the idea of reusing snowboards to create art and preventing them from ending up in the landfill. She tries to paint something beautiful, which people can then hang in their home.

Kimberly is continuously inspired by nature and the mountains. Her goal as an artist is to have her art transport the viewer into another world, if just for a moment. Painting is a peaceful time for her, when she can escape from the realities of her daily life. After many years of studying and photographing the patterns in nature, her landscape paintings are often representative of the natural world, but are not always completely realistic.

Kimberly has a home studio in Northwest Bend, where she does most of her painting. She and her husband, Andy, have two children, Isabella (16) and Luca (13). She loves to spend time hiking, snowshoeing, and camping with her husband, their two kids, and their Golden Retriever, Nala. She often does "plein air" painting when she is camping with her family.
